The stock exhaust on a V8 is a 2x2 center resonator into a 2x2 rear muffler. Think more of Magnaflow #11378 x2 Should be quite and a have a deep rumble (not loud)

I would check fuses and relay's.. The starter relay for the non start, and the top of the ABS relay there is "protection" fuse, chances are it also popped..

An 2001 A4 has one single amp. Which chances are the rear channel is dead. In the trunk, drivers side open the panel in there is where the amp is located.
