Default Need advise of how to fix dash trim

I have an 89 Audi 200 that overall is in great shape - unfortunately the faux wood panel on the front dash has several major cracks with portions of it held in place with tape. Makes an otherwise great looking car look like hell.

Can't find a replacement for it and need some advise how to address this issue.

Was think about removing it to see if I could patch up the structural breaks and maybe cover with some veneer - not sure thats a viable approach don't even know how to remove the trim piece.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Used is the only way to get one - there are several people parting them just post a WTB and hopefully you're prayer will be answered.

That said the wood trim is REAL wood. Zebrano to be specific - in a 200. The Veneer is applied over a metal fame an then poly coated.

The clear has had 20 years to darken and discolor with age so making it match the rest of the car should be something to consider.

That said. 220 Grit wet/dry and a bucket of soapy water and a lot of elbow grease will get the old clear off and get the wood ready for a new coat.

A chemical stripper will eat the clear and the veneer down to the metal base and you can the re-veneer it.

You can get the veneer here:

Also try 1-800-ALL-AUDI for a parts car donor from their bone yard

Thanks for the replies.

I have made inquiries on finding a used replacement with no luck. I talked with the owner of sjmautotechnik who tells me that my yr/model has a different type of metal trim attachment than most 200's and finding one maybe extremely difficult.

Sounds like I can remove and replace the veneer - think I can handle the veneer/color/coating end of things - havent a clue on how to safely remove the panel piece.

Can someone give me advise on how to remove the trim piece - any special tool needed? Where is it attached?

As always thanks and any advise appreciated.

HTH.
Thanks for the reference - that's a six month old thread but I will give it a shot.

Anyone have advise on how to remove the existing trim?

a 4mm Allen. (a lot of them)

Pull the column cover, the driver & passenger vent and the center or right center vent (they just pull out). Also the speaker grills. Pull the dash pad off will expose the two "hidden" screws that hold the center of the wood above the glovebox in-place.

Once the dashpad is off it's all self explainitory.
