Default Problems with 1990 QV8

I have had the car for a few years nad it has been for the most part trouble free, but now!!!!

First, I did not drive the car for about 4 months recharged the battery and fired right up. Like an Idiot I wanted to do some maintance work so I started pulling the relays and cleaning the connections. The car started fine but after a while it died, my first thought was the the relays but the car started right up again ran for a while then died, re started and pulled the fuel relay and it died, like it should, replace the relay with a new one and then pulled the fuel fuse and it died repalced that and it runs but still dies out at random times and sometimes not at all. Any ideas on what could caues this?

Second the fuel guage does not always work but after a while it it will kick in and the weird thing is that it does so when for example the seat belt warning comes on, is there a common realy that needs replacing? Also the fuel guage started jumping around along with the other instruments then seddled back to normal, any suggestions,,,,,,,,Thanks

Your first mistake was to let it sit. (Seriously, stuff this old doesn't take well to not being used).

So car starts (good) but will not stay running. <-- is that correct?

What relay's did you "clean"?

If so "hot wire" the fuel pump with a 12V line directly to the battery what happens?

I would like to guess and say you have dirty/bad grounds but you *could* have a bad fuel pump.

I removed all of the relays, one at a time cleand and replaced. The fuel pump relay is a new one.

The car will start and at times run with out any shut down but other times I can drive it and all of a suddeen it stops, I pull over restart and the car is fine.

It happend to my daughter who is the main driver and I can not have that happen to her she is 19 and not auto knowledgable.

If the car just "turns off" chances are you have a failing eng speed sensor.

There are two identical sensors Blinking out the trouble code will confirm it.

Try tapping (or slaming) your fist on the dash when the fuel gauge and the seat belt warning malfunction. On my two V8's the problem was in the connectors behind the dash.
