Try going to a junkyard and experimenting with similar cars. It's always easier to screw up something you don't have to put back together.

mmmmm, fresh valve cover gasket. I used silicone gasket material to be safe although I don't think it's necessary:

Can you unbolt the compressor and try to push it out of the way a little?

At least on my Subaru I can unbolt the compressor and completely move it aside to work on the car. You can actually remove the engine easily without disconnecting the compressor. Maybe the Audi...
