Has anyone ever found a source for the quattro driveshaft u joint?

(And by 'source', I don't mean by calling an 'Audi Specialist' and ordering thier expensive u-joint offering!)

I'm more interested in a part number (already have the one from Huw's page), or even better yet, an 'alternate application' that the U joint was used in, simailar as to how the hanger bearing is a BMW part.

(Just having the u-joint part number (without an application) makes it *Very* hard to source.)

I want to get one somewhere else. I'm thinking I coudl get one at a way better price, if only I had more information, like soomething else that it may have come in.

Morgan: When you got your u-joint, did you save the box (for part numbers?), or was there any useful information even there to see?

I had it shipped directly to my place doing the work...so I never saw the box/#'s.

Any information you have on the Ujoint box would be welcome.

Brand, part number, whatever looks useful!

Hopefully (and more likely) my problem is the hanger bearing. But I need information for plan "B", in case the problem IS the U-J.

Why is it the big issues only show up right before heading out for a big trip? (Last year, the head gasket blew out, just the week before Carlisle..!)
