Problem sounds like a bad crankshaft position sensor. It is the same problem that my E500 had and all V8 Benzes have gone or will go through. Well documented problem.

03-06 4.2 is way different than 07-10. I replaced mine a few years ago, so the ad for 03-10 is total BS. Go by part # on the one your car ca,e with or with VIN and a dealer's help.
