This same problem has happened to me.
06 a6 3.2 w/ navi ... the car is stuck on mute!

the dealer said i spilled something on the MMI buttons and i need to replace the head unit @ over $1000

i forgot to mention what kind of car is was .. it is an Audi 2006 A6 3.2 w/ Navi 20,000 miles.

Audio System stuck on mute

Hello all,

Everytime i try to turn the volume up on my car using the steering wheel or the knob by the shifter, it just stays in mute, i even disconnected the battery to see if it would reset...
