Default Just goes to show what you can stumble upon....

A couple of years ago I won an auction for a new old stock taillight for my DKW Junior - to replace the one I cracked while moving stuff around in our garage. I asked (as I always do) if he had any more DKW parts - "I'm helping liquidate the stock of the last DKW Dealer in the northeast...what do you need?" came the reply. I made a road trip into Michigan to see the place - it was very similar to that Portugese warehouse - Hudson Hornet, Studebaker Super Clipper, Ford Thunderbird, Triumph TR-3, Renault Dauphine, Mercedes 190D, remains of an Auto Union 1000S 2-door etc. etc. The owner was getting on in years and his son had finally convinced him to sell it all off - he was still in the original Auto Union showroom/repair building and had boxes upon boxes of parts....and piles of dealership materials and repair facility tools.
I contacted a member of our club to work out an arrangement to keep the stuff out of a recycling bin. A whole shipping container of stuff travelled from Michigan to Oregon....the DKW chassis ended up being sent to England IIRC.
That road trip was worth every minute behind the wheel....just wished I took more pictures.
Cheers!

Default Great story. . .

You were lucky to stumble upon that treasure chest of parts and had it saved from the trash bin. The club should award you a medal.

Would love to see your DKW's someday. Maybe next time when I'm back in NE.

Default They're not online...yet. I'll have to get on that.

It was almost like stepping through a door and back in time. Frank would have loved the TR...and the Renault. The buddy of mine that came along was all over the Hornet (he and his dad build drag cars). We asked about the Merc - it only had a couple thousand miles on the clock (apparently, it was stolen at an east coast dealer and the thief ran out of gas in Michigan...the car was sold at police auction and had sat in the showroom ever since) - the guy said that his son was getting it (bummer - it looked so much like a gullwing).
In the basement there were body panels for all sorts of cars, and boxes and boxes of parts (the best part were a bunch of Auto Union boxes with the full interior for a 1000S 2-door...new in the box!!!)
What I really wanted was all the paper stuff for the dealership - Dealership sign, showroom banners, posters, shop manuals, sales brochures and something the owner called a "police book" which showed the vins and description of all the cars that he sold and to whom. Apparently he sold at least 2 Monza's....and one of them was one of Auto Union's factory race cars. I would love to find out where they are now....and buy it before James.....

And it goes even *better* now that Steve has the igniton all sorted.

I guess we all just assumed 'no power' for that size of a car was normal.

Sorted out, It really has more power than we thought. Steve has now managed to get the DKW up to ~70mph!

Default Yep....now with 3 explosions per revolution!

instead of 2 and a puff of unburned hydrocarbons! Dead coil was the culprit...it must have been dead since I got it. Yes, the car "flies"....I could have gone faster than 70 as an experiment.....but it's an old car and doesn't deserve a Vmax flogging (besides, the old bias-plies get really squirmy around 70).
Cheers!
