Expected 3.0 TDI pricing & performance
We are holding off for the Q7 with the 3.0 TDI and I was looking for feedback on 2 issues:
Pricing:
- is it safe to assume the 3.0 will fall pricewise between the 3.6 and 4.2? Any other thoughts as to pricing?
Performance:
- can anyone give me a description of their experience with this engine while in the EU as it relates to the perforance characteristics of the 3.6? Same or better off line excelleration? etc.
I do bielive diesels can be a successful part of the US landscape gong forward if properly marketed. Other than the 1000 or so ex-pats and informed citizens who've put deposits down, I can see MB, BMW and Audi reporting incredible first 90 day sales of the product and then the bottom falls out where they all have stagnating inventory as those first buyers dry-up. From there, any future sales success will come through an effective public awareness campaign especially if fuel prices continue to hold where they are.
One continued failure of the Europeans is to realize the amount of support and marketing that needs to go into selling the US market on thier new cars beyond the brands core faithful. They just cant release new concepts by running a few ads in Archetural Digest or on CNBC at 8:30.
As consumers, we'll have almost 2 years at the new fuel economys pricing and many people will have adjusted thus placing even more of an emphasis on the need to aggressively market this technology.
I think very, very attractive initial leases rates are critical to the success of these cars. Putting units on the street and creating an aweness that the technology has arrived is the only way these cars will continue to move out the door.... that or $4 gas.

3.0 TDI is the cheaper option here
but like you posted support and marketing will affect its US price.
0-60 in 8.8 may not be as quick as you want but it has tons of torque and its rolling acceleration is fine. Traffic driving it is not relative anyway and it doesnt feel the trailer at all. Towing mode makes the changes sharper like sport mode so it actually feels faster.
I thought the BMW 2.5 TDI was smooth when my friend got one a few years back but it is not in the same league as this one.
Every drive is pure pleasure. You just cant believe its a diesel. Good thing its written inside the fuel flap!
Unfortunatly i cant give you a comparison with 3.6 from experience as none exist in Ireland and there is only one 4.2 FSI. No one but no one buys second hand gas guzzlers.
At the moment I refuel at about 900 kms mixed city motorway with 80 odd left in the tank. i think we have the same 100 Litre tank as you guys. Oh and I am not easy on the engine at all. I would cruise at 140 on the motorway and fail to resist the temptation to punch over 180 at some point on most trips. So I am well pleased with my mileage.

Re: Expected 3.0 TDI pricing & performance
We are in the same boat as well. Moreover, now I have to decide between the hybrid Q7 and the diesel Q7.
For reference, our Duramax 6.6 Diesel Crew Cab truck (Silverado) would get about 20 mpg, so I am hoping the 3.0 TDI Q7 gets somewhere around 25-27 mpg on the freeway.
