Default In case anyone's wondering how long Mobil 1 0W-40 lasts...

I just received my latest oil analysis from Blackstone Labs. After running the last oil for 5500 miles with one track event, the folks at Blackstone told me that everything was fine and to try for 6100 this time.

Well, I had all kinds of things going on around the time I hit 6100, so I didn't get around to changing the oil until 7571 miles! Needless to say, I was pretty worried when I sent the sample in. After all, I had three track events (6 total days) and one long road trip (1000 miles) on that oil, which was in my engine for close to 6 months. The report from Blackstone is as follows:

"You have added a couple thousand miles to your oil use interval and your Audi engine didn't even notice. Iron wear has slipped above the universal average level of 13, but that is to be expected with the extra miles oil use. So long as the lower end metals lead, copper and tin stay low, you are not affecting the potential longevity of the engine. Rings and pistons look perfect. This 0W/40 oil is working well for you so we suggest staying with it. Go ahead and run 8,000 miles for the next sample. We think you will find the same great wear levels."

BTW, iron measured 20 ppm, versus 11 ppm from the last test. That was the only material that increased - most stayed the same or decreased. I'm shocked, but impressed yet again with the Mobil 1. Go ahead and change at 3000 miles if you want to, but I just beat the hell out of this oil, and it held up pretty damn well. I provided the link to Blackstone's site in case anyone's interested in their service.

http://www.blackstone-labs.com/</a

Nice, thanks for the update. Make me feel better about letting it slide to 5000.

Default OK I'm convinced. I've been running M1 0w-40 for the last 15,000 miles

I change it every 5,000 miles. I guess that I should go to 6 or 7k miles. Thanks for the post. Since I switched from 0w-30 to 0w-40 I actually think that the oil temp is running cooler.

Default Pretty well. Work is great so far. Traffic is nonexistent. The new neighborhood

is great. I know it's all honeymoon right now, but I feel good about it.

I think I'm going to be calling you for some harnesses soon.
