Default So... just back from the dragstrip....

On vacation this week so I decided I would take my new S4 for some baseline runs before I start modding. Little upset as the wife backed out of going with me to hang by the pool and then my brother bailed so I had no one to film.... sorry I had hoped to have videos for the group.

Anyway, I have a 2010 S4 with the S-tronic tranny, 19's, sports dif, and 340 miles on clock when I got to the track(please no breakin comments in this thread! LOL).... Weather was 80F, 54-56% humidity, 60-61 dew point, 5-10 mph breeze, and sunny/partly overcast. The track sits at about 1,250 feet elevation. Unfortunately, I forgot the weather station but a guy was there with one and I looked at his a few times. His claimed 2900-3100... but I think it was a little high... probably more like 2500ish. Either way not great!

Made 4 runs within an hour. Got there about 45 minutes before making passes and let the car sit with the hood open, still was at temp when I started it and made the passes. Little under half a tank of gas, no weight reduction at all.

Run 2:
2.0626 60ft
5.6880 330ft
8.6121 1/8 mile
84.88 1/8 mph
11.1101 1000 foot et
13.2088 1/4 time
108.17 mph(best mph of the day)

Run 1:
2.0004 60ft
5.6403 330ft
8.5741 1/8 mile
84.72 1/8 mph
11.0810 1000 foot et
13.1907 1/4 time
107.67 mph

Run 3:
1.9503 60ft
5.5624 330ft
8.4881 1/8 mile
84.88 1/8 mph
10.9880 1000 foot et
13.0975 1/4 time
107.43 mph

Run 4:
1.9050 60ft(best 60 of the day)
5.5174 330ft(best 330 of the day)
8.4460 1/8 mile(best 1/8 of the day)
84.73 1/8 mph
10.9560 1000 foot et
13.0687 1/4 time(best time!)
107.66 mph

Thoughts.... Didn't think I would run a 13.06 especially with the conditions.... would have been happy with 13.3 to be honest. A good cool down and slightly better DA's and I would have been in the 12's! Car falls on it's face a little in the upper RPM's more boost/timing will help this... The car doesn't launch that well.... really needs launch control... if my car was a 6-speed I would have run 12.80's IMO! The tranny is really something though once moving... shifts are fast and very consistent.... I just couldn't get a good launch as I thought I would be in the 1.8 60 foot time.... was close the last run..... With the spare removed, 1/4 tank of gas and lower temps this car would be easily in the 12's.

Car really shocked a few folks, they couldn't believe that I was almost in the 12's. Will install the strat intake Thursday and weather permitting go again Sat. to see if I can get in the 12's. This car is going to be very fast with intake, exhaust and chip.... pulley change and it will be crazy.

Still hoping to get some dyno runs with and w/o the intake and before the exhaust. Sorry for the long post... let me know if there are any questions.... and again sorry I don't have vids! later Ron

Excellent times and pretty good trap times. What technique if any do use to launch the car? Did you just step on the pedal all the way.

Honestly.... didn't even think about it, so NO.... sigh... thanks for pointing this out. Didn't notice the idiot light though so I probably didn't activate it, like I did on the way to the track! LOL thanks Ron

Thanks... I am actually really happy with the times. I still don't have the launch figured out, honestly. My best run I went through the first yellow beam and then used my left foot on the brake. Moved to the 2nd beam, and jabbed the gas pedal hard on the last yellow on the tree and dumped the brake.... I could tell the timing was a little off so with more practice it will get quicker.... Let the car shift itself at redline and just kept it stable and straight.... Shifts at speed are crazy and one run I had a 98 turbo TA next too me that made ground during gear but lost ground on the shift..... was very noticeable.... later Ron

That's just it... you can't rev the car with the brakes on.... I think the jab and dump method works best.... it's a much different tranny than I am used to especially since I prefer manuals and I am still learning, again 350 miles on the car now....

Great runs...love that 108 MPH!!! Are there any people out there who think the S4's are running 333 HP? Just think what this engine will be doing once it's broken in. I bet you had a blast!!! Thanks for posting!

No problem.... hopefully some vids this weekend...

Yes, I had a good time... the car is tricky even though it looks fairly consistent... Honestly, used too much faster cars though...

The drivetrain is pretty impressive and probably under-rated.... Honestly, I left a few tenths on the table today.... a few K on the motor will help as will the intake and exhaust.... Got some other ideas also.... later Ron

great info - thanks for sharing it. I wonder how much faster the manual would be since it has a launch control feature (i.e. you can floor the car with the clutch in and it will hold RPM at just under 4K allowing you to dump the clutch with the throttle already on the floor).
