Report says: At high speed in hard rain, driver hits left barrier on a right hand turn, loses all sorts of control, bangs into right barrier 150m later, hits the wall behind the barrier and comes to rest on the barrier. Driver did not have seatbelt on and died in the accident.

RIP, whoever it might have been. RIP R8. Does this bring it to 2 R8s down?

Gotta wear those seat belts although that driver side doesn't look too good.

Default Interesting

The cockpit seems to have suffered no apparent damage. The report doesn't state the speed, but judging by the looks of the car, I'd say at least 95mph. Would it be OK to assume it is in general a car that has a good chance of survival in case of a crash if all security measures are in place(seatbelt fastened, no airbag fault)? This guy's steering wheel airbag doesn't seem to have engaged...

Does the airbag not function if the seatbelt is not fastened?

i believe that's correct. they can do more damage if the occupant isn't wearing a seatbelt

Default All Audis have had accelerometers for some time now. Airbags fire based on direction

and rate of decel, so if there was no heavy impact to the front of the car, the steering wheel bag would not have fired. Any airbag can do some damage to the person it is designed to protect, thus it only goes off in situations where it may be able to help. While there is front end damage, overall deformation to the front bumper support structure is minimal, which suggests a slide or spin. In this case the driver did not buckle up, so no front bag in any case.

A quick and dirty babelfish translation:

"According to police data the young man from Gummersbach was probably at the end of the west tangent on the motorway feeder with an AUDI R8 and not adapted speed on the way. [ by the strong lateral impact the driver did not have a <berlebens chance. ] Also aquaplaning is assumed by the strong Regenf °/°°lle as Ausl^ser of the accident. The car got anyhow behind a long right curve first left off the roadway and touchierte there the central guard rail. The driver lost obviously v^llig control more ¸ber its 420 HP-STRONG vehicle, came zur¸ck on the roadway, broke through approximately 150 meters further, directly before the Volmerhauser Br¸cke, at the right Stra?enrand the guard rail and stie? against a percussion guard. From there it hurled laterally with the driver's side against a there Stra?enschild and landed schlie?lich on the guard rail. The not buckled, gotten jammed driver had to be cut out by the fire-brigade from his car, however still succumbed at the accident place to his heavy injuries."
