Default How to make your Phatbox...well...skinny? (custom enclosure)

<center><img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/32631/pbox_modified1.jpg"></center><p>Cost: $25 in parts total (enclosure and random Home Depot hardware etc)
Parts: Poly case JB-65 enclosure
Time: 3 hours of dremel work (to enclosure and pbox innards)

Notes/thoughts:
- New enclosure takes up 1/4 the volume than the previous metal "shroud".
- Previous shroud does not provide cooling via aluminum (lots of othe pbox owners have confirmed this fact).
- been done for about a week (still sitting in my trunk like this)
- I might relocate it to the glovebox (as my blaupunkt ME3 is not there - more on that later)
- for those C5 folks with a 2003 or newer (without the trunk CDC harness, you can add the pbox to the glovebox by using some of the VW harness connectors (see pbox link in sig for details) Of course, the gbox will need to be cut a bit too.
- Pbox with RNSE: I love the new 0150 firmware in the RNSE because the mix/shuffle feature is more functional and I can mute/pause pbox play - bonus!!!
- You can even cover this new enclosure with grey carpet (see your local car stereo shop) to match your trunk...and install it in the trunk area...and it will blend in nicely (vs. having a 10lb chunk of aluminum staring at you).
- FYI - pbox is discontinued via Audi/VW etc...so you can find them on ebay for about $200+.

I'll put together a more details on the parts list ...sometime later this month, year etc.

Happy pboxing!!

Default Nicely done! Any reason to worry about heat issues?

The aluminum on the PhatBox always struck me as a heatsink. Not sure if it really serves that function.

Default

The aluminum frame served only to make it the same size as the CD changer it replaced.

Default Makes sense.

I can't see what sort of heat a hard drive could generate to necessitate a "heat sink" that big!

Default there is also a portion of the PCB that is linked to the back cover for heat dissipation...but..

...I really don't think disconnecting it (as i've done) will make any difference.
