AC recharge port on 96 A6.

A little on how to charge AC through the low warning switch port
I recharged my 1996 A6 system through the AC low pressure safety port without any problems at all. Used an old R12 guage set, got an extra 134 blue hose, a r12 to 134 conversion connector, and made a schrader valve opener insert (see pictures). Disconnect and unscrew low side pressure safety switch, bridge the safety connector with a paper-clip so the AC system runs, purge guage set hoses of air as you would normally do, connect blue hose up to port (yes it fits, not perfect but it holds a seal) and recharge system using guage readings just as you would any normal system. See pictures for guage setup I did. Sorry, didnt take pictures of recharging (got to stay focused during the recharging)

Re: A little on how to charge AC through the low warning switch port
Great info. DennisStehlik, but how did you connect to the high_side port on the condenser? It is not a standard 134 port. Please let me know how did you handle that.
TIA

Didn't connect the high side at all when I recharged
When recharging through the low, no need to connect to the high side. If I really wanted to connect to the high side to watch that pressure also, I could have modified my r12 hose set to connect the high hose to the high port, for I am pretty sure it is a standard 134a quick connect connection. I will double check and eat my words if not.

Not on mine (bummer!!!) Look at pic.

Just for comparison I took a picture of the port caps from A6 and my other car E320 (takes 134 too) and the difference is evident. A6's port is bigger in diameter as compared to E320. The 134 hose connector fits fine on E320 but not on A6.
Warm summer for me 'coz I am not going to the dealer ;-).

Re: Found Low side A/C port.... finally.
here a quote from service manual for R134a systems
Note:
Only a high pressure service valve is used for A/C system servicing. A low pressure service valve is not installed. Perform all A/C system service (ie. discharging, evacuating and charging) through the high pressure service valve only.
