Default 034's new Time Attack A4, VR6T powered.

Well, its time to let the cat out of the bag so to speak, we've been working on this project for some time but haven't said much about it. It's really coming along though, and we're getting very excited about it, so here are some of the details. 8)

THE PURPOSE

The car will debut at the 2007 Eurotuner Grand Prix in late September, so we're making a big push to finish it, we'll also be running the car at the Redline and Superstreet Time Attack series, as well as many Audi club and other track day events. Ultimately, the purpose of the car is to promote 034Motorsport products and services, to serve as a product development test bed, and to make grown men go "poopie in their pants" when they get a ride.

The car must be fast in the quarter-mile, must put down big-ish dyno #'s, and also haul around a track eating EVO's in a single turn. Oh yea, it has to be drop dead reliable and dead nuts sexy as well.

THE HISTORY

Mid 2006 Matrix Integrated (in Oregon) put an A4 quattro rolling-chassis up for sale, gutted, caged, stock CV's and rear diff still installed, no engine or other drivetrain to speak of. In a moment of impulsiveness, Issam Abed purchased the chassis as it was a pretty good deal. We began speaking about it and the potential of the chassis had, and decided it would make a great platform for an 034Motorsport Time Attack car we'd [034] been wanting to build. The cage and basic frame/chassis prep was already done, so all we had to do was put it together with some drivetrain and wala, easy! :P We took delivery of the chassis in early 2007 and began making preparation to have it done by the fall. All other work and parts performed are of 034Motorsport and its partner sponsors, overall a real team effort 8)

THE ENGINE

We wanted a motor that was powerful, reliable, low lag and very tractable, different, and affordable. No Cosworth V8's here, something someone could emulate in their garage for a sane budget. The different part ruled out the 1.8t or 2.7tt (which are both great motors obviously), I5 was too long and we already proved the hell out of that one. It either left the Harley V-Twin or the VW VR6 engine, and when late last year someone offered us a free 12v AAA long block with all accessories on it, the Harley started to look really expensive.

The VR6 made a lot of sense, and Issam's incessant hounding and panting over the topic helped too. The VR6 is compact, though it's a little longer than a 2.7t, its as narrow as a 1.8t which leaves lots of room on the sides for cool turbo (NO `s) and stuff. There is still plenty of room to fit the engine with a stock core support (slightly trimmed), and these Mo-effin VR6's, even 12v's, make tons of power, are very bulletproof and a dime-a-dozen.

The head started out by getting our Stage 3 porting job which improved flow 30% through the head and evened out the rather uneven port of the 12v head. 2mm Oversize valves went in, inconnel on the exhaust, held up by high rate valve springs, Ti-Retainers and OE lifters. Techtonics supplied some 268 cams and we'll likely test a set of 276's as well.
The block was overbored to 82.5mm for some JE pistons with 9:1 compression, Bildon forged rods, prissy'd up stock crank with 034Motorsport coated rod and crank bearings. The main and rods were TQ'd with some ARP hardware, the entire assy balanced to within 1 gram, and the whole shebang bolted together with ARP Head studs and an MLS head gasket.

The motor will have no problem supporting 1000HP and will run all day long on 5-600 HP track tunes (as is the idea). We machined up a custom starter mounting bracket with a ultra tq'ey hot rod starter (look for this as a product soon) to keep the motor cranking a custom 034Motorsport flywheel (look for this too )

We'll be using a very nice Kinetic Motorsport cast header, Tial 38mm wastegate, Garrett GT35R and a custom cast intake manifold with OBD2 VR6 throttle body (didn't want to go too big and kill throttle resolution). Our large sized intercooler assy will be going in with 2.5" IC plumbing, most likely a Tial 50mm BOV or something similar.

Dual Bosch 413 pumps (044 pumps on crack) will pull from custom Fuel safe fuel cells (one on each side of the drive shaft), -8AN feed line going to an 034 VR6 fuel rail, RC Engineering 750cc low impedance injectors.

THE DRIVETRAIN

Stock A4 axles, S4 drive shaft, S6+ 01E trans with Stasis 5:1 center differential and Stasis Clutch type Rear Differential keep the wheels turning (Rota 17x8"), 034Motorsport Engine cradle and custom trans mounts keep things bolted down. A custom SPEC Stage 3+ with dual spring diaphrams will hold 700HP. We'll be running Eurotuner GP spec Falken tires, most likely 255 wide.

SUSPENSION/BRAKES

Front Brakes will consist of Stasis 14" Alcons, rears are custom 034 13" setup with vented rotors. Suspension will be Stasis Motorsport Ohlins all around, Hotchkiss rear sway bar and custom front bar. We'll be using an AP racing pedal box, the drivers seat is moved back about 2 feet (more pictures soon).

THE ELECTRONICS

Lots going on here, electronics will be one of the highlights of our build.

Of course, it goes w/o saying, 034EFI Stage IIc with 4-BAR map sensor will orchestrate engine movements, 034 HO DIS Coils will fire spark with custom wire set, we'll be running off stock VR6 sensors including the crank pickup.

An AIM PRO dash will serve dashingly informing the driver of key engine operating parameters, as well as offering full logging and telemetry of engine and chassis dynamics, with track mapping to boot so we can tell the driver where he's going to slow (Most likely Christian Miller, and most likely won't be going slow )

We'll be laying in ALL the wiring for the car, including chassis, central fuse panel, you name it.

To ensure the support team is totally dialed in with the driver on track, we'll be using a full Speedcom Radio setup including helmet mounted headsets and microphones.

LOTS of other details to discuss and go over in the future, but this is a start. I will say, the swap is not "easy", we have full CAD, CNC, welding and fabrication facilities here on site, and there have been plenty of use of these resources, but it does go in, and it does fit, and it will be A LOT of fun.

Sweet! Question: How much weight, if any, is saved with the 13" rear brake setup?

Default It's a tossup with these rotors, the calipers are lighter, rotors are heavier.

We'll be offering a 2-piece lightweight option as well in the future.
