DSG Failure
FYI
If you hear a chain like slapping noise then check your DSG clutch plate.
I have an 06 A3 3.2 DSG S-line and at ~18K miles it dump most of the transmission oil from the DSG multi-plate clutch pack.
When they took off the multi-plate clutche's cover they found the "clutch end cover circlip" (part 4 from image) damaged.

The Audi dealer replaced the complete clutch multi-plate pack and after performing the required shimming my A3 is driving great again.
According to AOA and my Google searches this is the 1st time something like that happened to a DSG system besides burned clutch plates due to the earlier "launch control" software.
Still I love my A3 3.2 DSG S-line with the 18" and the P-Zeros. Nobody can shift that fast not even a GT3!
During the work I was driving an 08 TT convertible with 2.0T DSG (non-Quattro) and I was keep spinning the front wheels every time I tried a quick launch.
3.2L+DSG+Quattro+S no substitute!

Did Audi give you any idea what the cost of this repair was?
This is the kind of thing that worries me about my DSG. DSG can be spooky anyways, but I can't imagine that this didn't cost a few grand. Makes me want to extend my warranty if we plan on keeping this car.

There have been numerous DSG failures here in AUS
Hi there,
Not sure if the problems have been the same, but there have been numerous DSG failures here in AUS, mostly in Golf GTIs which obviously share the same hardware. The GTI is much more popular here and so I guess the number of failures has been more visible.
Apparently the box + labour can cost AUD$15-20K which is about half the market value of a 2yo car....

Re: DSG Failure
No. I do not know the cost of the repair but I will definitely get an extended warranty before the warranty is over. I get an extended warranty on all my new cars. Any modern car has multiple ECUs for the various systems and these ECUs are expensive to replace.
The only problems the DSG transmissions have seen is burned clutch packs (plates) because of the earlier versions having the "Launch Control" option software. You cannot blame the DSG transmission if you keep "launching" very often.
The launch software is derived from the Rallies and F1 for very quick starting times in expense of the clutch plates. Of course they have the funds to replace their clutch packs on every service stop (rally) and/or races (F1).
Try "damping" the clutch on a fully manual transmission often and you will need a new clutch and some other parts too!
By the way, that's the reason Audi dropped the "Launch" software from the DSG after Y05.
