Default Interesting find...not for the weak at heart...looking for some suggestions.

Received an email into the Kansas City Audi Website last week. Was from a college student who was touring a old theater turned into a parking building in downtown KC. The building is scheduled for demolition in the coming weeks.

The email describes an 84 Audi GT Coupe sitting in the basement with no wheels and asks if we'd be interested in finding a home for the car. I gave him a quick call and he provided me with insurance information, VIN and description of the location.

I've only been an Audi owner for about 5 years and am now very active in the club here in town. This was of interest as we've been talking about a club project car.

Well...I went to work on the phones this week, Contacted my State Farm insurance agent as the insurance card was from SF. They helped me locate the owner who was shocked to hear about the abandoned car and said the club could have it. Contacted the building owner who said they'd have no problem with us looking at the car and taking it if we wanted it. Turns out the building is only 4 blocks from my office and finally got in today to take some pictures.

Stop here if you really love GT Coupes...this is kind of ugly.

Yes, the car has been sitting for a while and "was running" but needed work when it was parked. Has been sitting for at least 4 years and was obviously vandalized by some wonderful people. All the glass is shattered except the windshield.

It took me a minute but I finally found the trunk release in the door. In the trunk was all the interior plastic bits and two wheels! Look to be in pretty good shape!

Yup...it'll buff right out!

There is some rust...

Most everything is there and there is potential to salvage it. We're planning to pull it out over the weekend and get it to a safe location.

Questions: First, I want to confirm the bolt pattern is 4 x 100. I have a set of snow tires/wheels for my MkIII Jetta that should bolt right on to push it out. (We won't try and start it for now.)

Now...what to do with it? I think it looks as if the car too far gone for restoration. We really won't know until we get it out and get a chance to go over it.

If this was a quattro coupe I think we'd take the time to restore, but a FWD coupe probably really isn't worth it.

Second option: Track car? Heavy FWD car? Probably not particularly a good option

Third: Part it out and let all proceeds go for the local ACNA chapter? Are there hard to find parts here worth salvaging for ebay?

Fourth (and my favorite): Maybe this is our 24 hours of Lemons car? I think it would be a hoot to get it running and enter in that race.

Any other suggestions or thoughts? Are we completely out of our minds for dragging it out of the bowels of the building (never mind...don't answer that!).

Default Yeah, those GT's suck on the track. Certainly don't do it. More inside...

Look down.....

I'd give your 2.7 a run for it's money on most tracks in the area.

I have all the glass you need if you want to restore it.
And if you want to part it, I'll take the dash if it's not cracked.
Pre 85 Coupes are 4X100.

Default It's actually not that bad besides the rust

All the major stuff seems to be there, there's no big body damage and the wiring seems fairly unmolested. I bet you can find most of that glass for fairly cheap and there are some other nickel and dime things that will start to add up (battery, rubber bits, etc).
The good stuff is that it's a 5-speed with a 5 cylinder engine and (IMO) a good paint color.
it's ugly now but would actually polish up quite a bit with not too much money or time I'd bet.

Default Very nice...me the nOOb on this subject...no offense intended

I've had no opportunity to research this much and know only a bit about the GT.

What kind of weight did you drop it to? HP potential of the motor? Longevity? I've heard nothing but good things but have no experience!

I really love the look of the car and would like to restore or make a track car...seriously.

Advise will be graciously accepted!

Give him a run for his money? Don't be modest, you give most M3's a run for their money. Especially when the track gets twisty.
