You should measure the camshaft nose to heal before
you do anything else. Also, I would cut apart the oil filter to look for debris. I would guess that your engine is OK.

Mine looked the same when i did my valve cover gaskets...
I said f*ck it.. put the seal back on it and closed it all up.... I ain't gonna deal with it now.. To much else going on. Josh

Just did cam adjuster seals yesterday...
I had the same varnish look, but my cam lobes looked a lot better - no visible surface wear like yours. Not saying that the cams are shot, but...
Mine has 85K on it, been running Mobil 1 since buying the car at 70K. 5K oil change interval. Who knows before that, car was a lease.
