Default 1.8T driveability symptoms

Hello All,

I just had my car in at the Audi dealer to get a cold start issue resolved. The car was misfiring on cold starts, and after checking the coils, plugs and coolant temp sensor, it turns out I had two bad/leaking injectors.

Well, I haven't gotten the chance to do my own cold start yet to see if they truly did fix the problem, but I am noticing some things when I drive the car that have me a little curious.

Is it normal to smell a little bit of exhaust through the heater vents in the 1.8 when the car comes to a stop? Also, when I try to hold the car between 1,600 and 2,000 RPM's while moving the engine will start to vibrate a little and the RPM's will bounce +/- 100 RPMs, almost as if it wants to down shift but can't make up its mind.

Well, strike 1 for Audi, the new injectors didn't fix the problem.

So, by process of deduction we can remove:
Bad Coils
Bad plugs
Bad Coolant Temp Sensor
Bad injectors

Anyone have a clue why my 1.8 would misfire on cold starts, fluctuate RPM's when held between 1,600 and 2,000 RPMs, and smell of rich exhaust that is apparent inside the car when stopped?

Vacuum leak possibly.

Hmmm...possibly. Wouldn't a vacuum leak cause the car to drive like sh$t all the time though?

How about the exhaust smell? Would a vacuum leak cause a rich exhaust smell inside the car?

Other possibilities?

Default There is a TSB issued concerning cold start misfires, requires the ECU be reprogrammed.

The ECU reflash programming update resolves the cold start misfires, being a software issue.

Default You could have a bad 02 sensor

This should pull a check engine light. But, with the exhaust smell and rough idle, your one or both oxygen sensors could be going. Something else to consider and check.
