Questions about the basics of the 1.8T engine...
Hi all,
I have had my 1.8T for a few months now and I absolutely love the car. I am after the following engine/spec details to help me better understand the in and out of the engine. I very much appreciate your input...
1. What is the factory turbo boost? What is the maximum boost the engine can run without blowing up?
2. Are the standard pistons forged or just casted?
3. Does the turbo need cooling down (idle for 1 min or more) after every drive?
4. Should I use 91, 95 or 98 octane fuel?
5. How much increase in performance if it has a FMIC (standard boost and turbo)?
6. How much increase in performance if it has a water spray(for intercooler)?
Thanks in advance.

Have you searched on these topics? Other than the pistons, these seem like common questions
I believe 2000 and earlier 1.8Ts have forged pistons and 2001&up use cast. In stock form, 91 octane fuel should suffice. Those are odd octane numbers you mention, where are you located? My APR "91 octane" software is 1 bar (14.7PSI), which is higher than even a 2003 1.8T which is probably around 0.7 bar (10-11PSI). K03 turbochargers are small and really don't need a bigger (or front mount) intercooler and the pressure drop would probably cancel out any gains you got from cooling. A water sprayer should add a slight gain, since the cooler the intake charge, the better.

1. buy a boost gauge
it's a great preventative maintenance mod -- it will tell you when something's wrong.
2. cast on yours, IIRC
3. only if you drive it hard... more important once you're boosting more
4. stock ECU = 91 octane. you can realize gains with higher octane gas if you have the right programming for it
5. none with stock ECU and turbo. if you get chipped, it will certainly help
6. negligible in stock form, i'd assume.

Re: Questions about the basics of the 1.8T engine...
1. On your setup I think it's around 10-11psi
2. don't know
3. You should definitely let it idle for a couple of minutes after a spirited drive
4. FMIC is more about keeping you from losing power rather than gaining it.
5. Same thing again as 4. You could also think about water injection. There's some A4 guys and one TT'er who run an Aquamist water/methanol injection.
