I just received my CR news letter and in that document CR discusses and shows what they did. They used the A3 3.2L running an ice rink with the various tires to determine their ice ratings. So, an ice rink should be the worst-case as far as driving on ice (no chance for rocks, sand, or whatever to help the traction).
