Default Talk to me about this car

<center><img src="http://www.atspeedimages.com/csrg2003/1960_dkw_fjr/1960_dkw_fjr.jpg"></center><p>Word on the net is it's a 1960 DKW but...

A couple things don't jive;

4 bolt hubs
Wrong logo for the vintage
Modern wishbones and coilovers
The fact that for a DKW it's rear engine, all the DKW Formula juniors I've seen are all front engine
Wrong grill profile
For that vintage I'd go so far as to think it would be a belly pan design and this appears to be a full modern tube frame

Any thoughts?

Where in the world did you take that picture?? There were definately some rear engine DKW/ Auto Union F-Jr cars. Mitter, Hartmann, Melkus, Elva and some Lotus 18's were built with our great 2-stroke. I don't know enough about any of them to say which were front and which rear but I think most of the european cars were early 60's and rear engine. Where is that car??

Default No doubt it's a DKW motor

<center><img src="http://www.atspeedimages.com/hmsa_2004/1960_dkw_fjr_engine_2.jpg"></center><p>I'm inquiring more as to the chassis. I know the Auto Unions were typically rear engine, but all the DKW logo'd chassis I have seen were all front's. Also the last year of production (semi-official) was 1959.

I just was wondering, curious.

That picture was from am HMSA event in 2004. The only other reference I found about that car described it as a DKW engined car, but not specifically a DKW chassis. Minor meaningless point.

I need a life.

Default Life for sale......

Last year of "official" Auto Union production was 1965 - not including the cars produced by the DKW Vemag plants in Brazil or by Auto Union itself to fullfil military contracts for the Munga (which begat the VW Iltis). It looks like a 1000CC motor as the coolant port is mid-way on the head. I have a magazine that has an article on front and rear-engined DKW Formula Juniors - apparently you could look to the company for some backing if you maintained the front engine/front drive arrangement - any rwd stuff could not get support from AU. I'll see if I can dig out the article before Carlisle. Mike Nilson here has a Mitter Formula Junior he's restoring - it used three Dellorto carbs(not sure if he's located any replacements since the originals didn't come with the pile of parts he got). The 4 bolt hubs are correct, though (don't know about the lug spacing), but the steering assembly was likely adapted from a VW or a mini.
On rear drive DKW's, have you ever seen the bi-motor ice racing Junior?
Cheers!
Steve

Default Thanks for the info

There are so many variants out there, this one caught my eye. There's really no information on it anywhere.

The info I scrounged from around and about was that while they were still producing vehicles the manufacture of the formula's ended in 1959. I think that was from a racing site if I remember.

The only badged DKW formulas I have found thus far have been front engined. I did find a few that had DKW engines but were badged AU or not badged at all. I'll have to keep looking. If that guy with all the old literature is at Carlisle I'll have to browse what he has.

It's a challenge sometimes trying to find out about some of these older models especially the more unusual ones. I've been trying to locate reliable information on Deutsch Bonnet's for awhile now, and it's tough to come by.
