Do dealers need to program the key?
I`ve just ordered a new switchblade key for my 99.5 a3 and the dealer reckons they need to program the actual key aswell as the remote part.
He reckons the key needs to be programed to work with the factory imobiliser.
Just that I`ve not heard of this before and wondered if he just wants more money from me or doesant know what hes onabout.

Assuming that I understand the direction on the Ross-Tech website ...
Then to code a new key, you have to either:
a) Bring both the car and *all* existing cars to the dealership to recode the keys, or
b) You can do it at home with a VAG-COM.
If I understand correctly, you need to check whether your Immobilizer is separate (controller 25) or integrated in the instrument panel (controller 17). Then follow the appropriate procedure according to "Key matching with 4-digit SKC."
I hope this helps. (I also hope this is correct. =))<ul><li><a href="http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/cars/index.html">VAG COM Immobilizer Info</a></li></ul>
