Default New to the vag-com

Alright, well I have a knock off cord since I think that vag-com is asking an absurd amount for theirs. So I'm running a full version of 409.1 on vista...Yes it is possible. I can get the cord to identify and all that good stuff. I want to get the codes and reset them, but one problem I don't get the user interface. I am not a beginner at computers, I work at my school IT department all year round...I don't just carry crap and plug it in either. But I need some help, from what I've gathered from the directions on ross-tech I should go to autoscan after I get the settings saved for the port. But still no codes...Some please help, thanks. Please no one say update since nothing past 409.1 will work with generic cords. And I'm not buying a new cord. Thanks again.

Default You say "no codes..."

What do you get when you run an AutoScan?

What do you get when do Select -> 01-Engine -> Fault Codes?

Default ** cough cough ** This board is hosted by Ross-Tech, the very people you commented on.

You should consider purchasing the "genuine article" from them, their product is very worth it.

The first time you trouble shoot something wrong with your car, it will probably pay for itself.

<a href="https://forums.audiworld.com/a4gen2/msgs/1047956.phtml" target="_new">Case in point.....</a>

.....and you can impress all your techie IT friends with how you can "hack" your car with your new cool new dongle thingie (believe me, they are impressed).

Default Absurd amount???? Excuse me, but are you effing kidding me?

I spend between $2500 and $8000 for a scan tool for a single make (BMW/MB/Porsche), and you're whining about two hundred and fifty bucks? And on the very forum that the people who create this software support? Wow.....what the hell else does the world owe you?

Default I see you read the FAQ...

"When posting questions related to a problem you are having with a particular car, always state the exact make/model/year/engine of the car you are having a problem with. Also state any modifications you have made to the car. Incomplete information will often get you no answer, or worse yet, the wrong answer."

What kind of car?

And funny thing...my cable works.

Well it's good to see that I wasn't successful in insulting the guys who host the forum, but rather everyone. The car is a 1996 Audi A6 Quattro it is an automatic and for that year there was only one engine offered. Aside from that, when I run autoscan I get this.

<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/71847/screen_shot_1.jpg">

And as for the engine-&gt; fault codes thing, fault codes is never an option, it is grayed out the entire time. TIA.

Well that is great for you, although I assume you work for a shop that requires you to have instruments like that, my post was put here for help not to be harassed, and I know the world doesn't owe me anything. I typically look for a cheaper way of doing things since I'm nineteen and paying my way through college.

Default Looks like it isn't talking to any control modules at all.

You need to take this problem up with your interface supplier.

You may also want to try using a PC that isn't running Vista if you're going to use a version of VAG-COM that pre-dates Vista by several years..;-)

Default Think about the way this forum responded to you...

(admittedly a bit harsh, but completely expectable) and yet Uwe, whose intellectual property you are "borrowing," responded above and beyond the high road. if he's charging an absurd amount, i hate to ask what you think is reasonable. buy a real interface from Uwe.
