Remote Key Programming Question
Hi Guys -- I have a 2001 A6 4.2v8 and lost one of my remotes.
I have VAG-COM and am not afraid to use it.
However, my question comes as to what is the best key to get? I get an "uncut" key?
Would something like this from Ebay work:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300106961550&s sPageName=ADME:B:EF:US:11
Thanks guys!<ul><li><a href="http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300106961550&s sPageName=ADME:B:EF:US:11">http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300106961550&s sPageName=ADME:B:EF:US:11</a</li></ul>

Still need some help guys . . .
Do I need to get the SKC from my dealer? Does a dealer charge for this? What is best source to get the blank key cut?
I'm looking for a step-by-step guide if possible.
Thanks!

No, you don't need an SKC to match a remote,
in fact, you don't even need VAG-COM to match a remote.
However, you do need an SKC to match the immobilizer transponder in a new key to the immobilizer.
So the question is: Are you just gonna match a new remote, or the immobilizer too?

Uwe - can you rephrase the question to me . . . here's what I have . .
I have a new key and new remote.
I have a working key and working remote.
I want to make the new key and new remote work with the existing car.
I *guess* I need to match both the immobilizer and the remote correct?
Thanks for being patient with me guys. I don't even know if my a6 has an immobilizer.

If it has an immobilizer, then the key itself must be matched
in addition to the remote. They are essentially unrelated (an exception being some of the newest cars with keyless start).
Matching a key requires a PIN code which is damn near unobtanium these days.
You can easily check if the car has immo using VAG-COM. Access the instrument cluster and let us know what it says in the "Extra" fields.
Dealer will probably refuse to cut a steel key like you linked to on eBay. OEM keys are brass, and steel is hell on the cutting tool. Also, many people who've bought keys on eBay found they simply can't be matched, sometimes the immo, sometimes the remote.
