Default VAD Mobile Frequently Asked Questions

In the time that VAD was attending Waterfest 13, a number of relevant questions were asked regarding VAD's features and functionality. I have elected to combine those inquiries to form a FAQ section. If you have any further questions regarding the FAQ, feel free to contact me directly by e-mail or phone call.

FAQ

1/ Does the VAD Mobile stop charging when the ignition is off? Should I be worried about the batteries going flat?

The VAD only charges when the ignition is set to the "ON" and "RUN" position. The Palm batteries, in particular the batteries for the newer Palms, are very durable. I have not received any complaints regarding Palms dying or not holding a charge from those customers who have purchased the charging cable.

2/ Will there be functionality with OBD-I?

In order to communicate with OBD-I vehicles, a special 2X2 adapter, is required which is not included in the standard VAD Mobile package. This adapter sells for US$39.00, and is in stock. VAD will not function on pre-OBD-I vehicles.

3/ Is there a generic OBD-II module available for the Palm software?

VAD Mobile is VW/Audi Group specific only. The software will run on VW, Audi, Seat, Skoda, Bentley, and Lamborghini, but not other manufacturers beyond that list. You can, however, obtain comprehensive OBD-II software when purchasing the VAD Pro-900.

4/ Is there a Palm you recommend? Are there requirements for a Palm to work?

There are over 100 PDA's that are compatible with the VAD Mobile software. The PDA's must run on the Palm OS operating system, version 3.0 or newer. PDA's that are USB based or Windows based do not function with the VAD Mobile software.

As far as a recommendation, any Palm that uses the new multi connector would be a good choice. These Palms (ie. Tungsten E2 and TX, TREO and Lifedrive) can utilize the new integrated charging cable, which presents a distinct advantage to the consumer.

VAD will post a list of the compatible PDA's to the website once it is updated. In the meantime, feel free to contact VAD directly with these inquiries.

5/ Are the VAD Mobile software and cables sold separately? Is it less expensive?

VAD Mobile is only available as a complete single license package. If you own the software already and decide to upgrade your Palm, please contact VAD directly for instructions on how to acquire additional cables.

6/ Does the US$269.00 include a Palm?

No. The VAD Mobile package is a software and cable package only. VAD will advertise from time to time a package including a Palm for available purchase. These packages will include warranty information for the Palm, as well as all necessary cables to get connected. We made a package available for Waterfest with the Palm III, for example.

7/ Will VAD be providing instructions on running Adaptation, and other functions such as Coding and Pin Enabling?

VAD provides instructions on how to access all these functions in the PDF manual included on the CD-ROM in the kit. We are in the process of building ECU lists, Measuring block lists, and similar reference materials for VAD Mobile customers. It is a slow process, and one that requires great attention to detail. VAD's hope in the meantime is that customers can help each other out, or consult those reference materials listed on the internet to further understand these functions. More instructional documents of this nature will appear on our website over the next few months.

8/ When will VAD Mobile become available for the Pocket PC, I-Phone, or my Windows Mobile Treo?

There are no current plans for making the software available for any of these devices. VAD software was specifically written for the Palm OS system because of its stability, and its affordability. There are plenty of inexpensive PDA's that can be purchased affordably to be used as a dedicated VAD diagnostic tool.

9/ Will my Treo function will the software?

Your Palm OS equipped Treo will function with the software. Treo phones using the Windows Mobile operating system will not.

10/ When will you be posting more information on the "Features and Benefits" portion of the website?

Our website went live just shortly before Waterfest last weekend. We will be adding new content all the time. Look for new information to appear frequently, and for posts to appear on the forums announcing these additions.

11/ What do customers typically use this VAD software for? What do they find most useful?

The multi-faceted function of the VAD Mobile means there are many answers to this question. Users range from daily drivers to dedicated racers, and as such they use various functions on a regular basis. An obvious answer would be its ability to recognize and clear specific factory VAG fault codes. At local dealerships, you will be charged up to $80-$90 for this exact task. VAD is not just a code clearer however. It provides specific performance measurement for a wide variety of vehicle parameters. A quick study of the Measuring Block list in an R32 for example, will show the hundreds of values that can be monitored with this software.

12/ How does this software compare to the product offered from your competitor using the PC platform?

VAD recognizes that there are a lot of different ways to perform diagnostics. The purpose of our software was to provide a portable and powerful option to the PC tools currently available. VAD believes that owning the complete VAD Mobile package gives the consumer the ability to take their scan tool anywhere, power it up within seconds at anytime, and then store it in the glove box when not being used. As far as functionality is concerned, the products are very similar. What VAD lacks in display space, it makes up for in speed and usability. And remember, VAD will always try and improve its product offerings and performance. The feedback of our loyal customers drives us to get better, and we are committed to maintaining free updates to all of our customers for this reason.
