Default BMWs are fine. Their drivers aren't.

Around the world, BMW drivers are universally rude and aggressive. It's a remarkable phenomenon: one make draws so many a$$holes.

Default i've owned ~10 bmws... and i agree...

most of the drivers are asses. pompous, too.

i've had a couple E30 M3s (both salvage title, but still fun)... a US E36 M3, and a gen-u-ine EU E36 M3 (fun, fun, fun)... E34 530 and 540 5spd... some crappy ones, too...

but rarely got along with other bimmer drivers, found nothing but lame comments about my rims not having enough dish, etc...
how common they are (around here, anyway... can't drive down any street without seeing at least one M), and the average driver of them, turned me off of them.

my current "fun" car is a volvo 740 turbo sedan... partially because of the awesome performance community, and majorly because of so few performance modded specimens around, love the cars. doesn't hurt that they're dead easy to get quite a bit of power out of, and don't weigh as much as you'd think (mine's 2980lbs wet, not very stripped down at all)... but that's way off topic, so i'll shuddup now.
(i'm here, because i'm both a fan of audis, and currently looking for/trying to figure out exactly what i want... narrowed down to: C4 S4, '91 200 20v, or swapping a 20vt into a 4k

back on topic of exhausts...
i know there are lotsa fans of flowmasters and/or other chambered mufflers, but i've found that most of them are a compromise of some sort... many flow horribly at certain resonant frequencies (which is way beyond me) / volumes of exhaust... (granted, might not be noticeable on a street car)...
i'll go for a well designed, well made absorption muffler any day (or none, which i've done many a time)...
and as far as "overkill"... i don't quite believe in it. a single 3" is fine and dandy on a street driven 2.5L car... "not enough back pressure for good torque" is an old wives tale/urban legend/just plain wrongness... 0 backpressure would be ideal, but a wee bit of it aids (sometimes greatly) in muffling noise that the law man dont dig upon...

... think i went off topic and on a few tangents there... so there's a good chance none of the above makes sense... if not, just ignore me

Default D00d..check out motorgeek....

..if you wanna know about motor swaps.
I'm doing a 2.6l 20vt stroker motor & putting it in a 90 CQ.

The 2.6 motor is a combination of...
93 Eurovan 2.5l, board out 83mm to make it a 2.6l. Deck height is taller, crank is way bigger & rods are huge..long stoke..know what I mean ;->
Top end is from a 93 Urs4 20vt. With a combination of goodies.
Anyway check out motorgeek..you'll like it there.
& I'm all ways up for a good conversation..so if you are as well I could give you some pointers. ron_01056@yahoo.com..come enter the dark side my brother..Muwahahahaaaaaaaaa

Default spintech muffler?

<center><img src="http://www.spintechmufflers.com/spintech/productimages/frontimg.gif"></center><p>I've been considering spintech mufflers for years but just waiting for one of the mufflers to go before I take the leap.

These mufflers are popular with big block folks. It's a high tech muffler that doesn't employ any fiberglass. There's even an article where some guy put one on his cessna airplane.

I have no idea what they would sound like on my 20020v but from the sound of spintechs on big blocks, it seems fairly effective at noise reduction.

Since the turbo deadens the exhaust note to some degree I think it should be somewhat stealthy.

Not sure what to do about a resonator as I definitely don't want any drone at all.<ul><li><a href="http://www.spintechmufflers.com/spintech/spintechindex.asp">spintech website</a></li></ul>

Default I totally agree...

Their approach seems cool and I'm planning to do a Spintech setup "when the time comes."

I think it will be effective and quiet. Heard good things about them and they really do sound bad a$$ on big block cars.

Make sure you post your results if you do it!!

Default There was a thread on MG about the grooved heads...

search for it, you'll probably find it. Was pretty informative, IIRC.

Default Oh well that's just not even fair!

I've had 5000's since 6 mons before I started driving (which is over 4 years now) I've played the game, I've sweated it out over these things just as much as you all now. (and to be honest, if I were smarter, i'd have gotten rid of this this a LONG time ago. heh)

No Bimmer for me. I'll be an audi-guy until the day I smarten up and buy a Honda. heh.
