Default Houston we have Launch Control... And other ramblings of a 2008 S-Line TT owner after the 1st week.

Well... It's been a week since I picked up my 2008 2.0T FSI Ocean Blue TT from Nate and the other great guys at Penske Audi West Covina.

My S-line is fully optioned with the exception of the parking sensors.

Here's the straight dope.

If you're considering replacing your current TT with the MkII, as I was, you won't regret it one single bit. It rides better, handles better, looks better (to some but not all), the 2.0T engine is better, etc.

I don't miss _any_ of the old MkI TT interior "dimples" like I expected too. Maybe after 8 years of MkI TT ownership, those dimples just faded into the background.

Engine - The 2.0FSI is quite an improvement over the 1.8T. Where the 1.8T felt harsh toward the red-line, the 2.0 is very smooth. The 2.0T is calm/tame at normal throttle input, but tip in a little more, and you'll unleash the beast. No lag and I find it way more fun then the 3.2 version.

Exhaust note is OK, but I'd like it more if it was a little deeper sounding.

DSG (S-Tronic) - For the first few days I kept looking for the clutch but I don't miss it one bit. With manual control, the DSG is every bit as involving as the stick/clutch. In fact, I found it quite the ally when carving the twisty back-roads of GMR (Glendora Mountain Road and Glendora Ridge Road). Not having to take a hand off of the steering wheel is a big plus on those roads.

DSG - Launch Control - Oh Boy... Is this fun... And I can't believe that Audi let us have it here in the USA! I rolled over 700 miles today so it was time to see how LC does in the new TT. ASR off... check... DSG in "S"... check. Left-foot on break... check... right foot to WOT... check... Launch... Launch... Launch. Car takes off like a *****, pulls straight as an arrow... Grins from ear-to-ear. No fried clutch, perfect every time.

Magnetic Ride - It doesn't make the TT a supercar, but I don't think it can be easily matched without a significant suspension upgrade investment. If you only drive in a straight line, the MagRide won't make a difference. If you like the twists and turns of a mountain road, you'll be hard-pressed to find anything better. With its ability to dynamically adjust each damper, and near flat cornering, it pushes the TT into the next category of handling. Body roll is limited and the car seems well planted in any situation.

Rear-spoiler - never hear when it goes up or down. My friend has a crossfire, and it sounds like something is tearing off the car when it goes up/down. On the TT, I can't hear it at all.

Interior is Audi fantastic!
Seats are very comfortable, supportive, and it's nice to have all the power adjustments.

The multi-function steering wheel is one of the best features. With the exception of adjusting the air-con, I think it can do everything else from that wheel. I was even surprised at how good the voice command is, although the Woman's voice is a bit "stern" when talking.

Nav+ - As far as Navigation goes, it's quite good. I do wish that it had a touch-screen, but everything else works well. I do like that it gives you multiple routes to select when setting a destination. The "points of interest", such as "Winery" and "Border Crossing" are pretty funny, but if you're smuggling someone over the border, I guess it helps to know where it is. After the stress, I guess hitting the winery isn't a bad idea!

Nav+ - SD slots - This works well for MP3 playback. I used SyncTunes to populate my SD cards directly from iTunes. You get track/artist names, etc. I'm using 2GB cards with no issues.

iPod Interface - This sucks hard. There is no upside. In retrospect, getting the CD changer would have been the better option.

Bluetooth Phone-prep - Except for that nasty-looking, and useless, phone-cradle, the BT portion works great. I've got an iPhone and it syncs, and transfered my contacts list to the car. All the standard stuff can be done from the Nav screen or the Multi-function steering wheel.

Adaptive Bi-Xeon lights - very nice, bright. There is a slight noise when the shutter/iris opens when switching to the hi-beams. On twisty roads, the lights really do follow the road. It looks like the yellow reflectors are just add-ons, so I may try removing them at some point.

I'm sure there is more to mention but I can't think of it right now. If there is something specifc you'd like to know, ask, and I'll be happy to answer.

Oh, and here are some pictures. The original ones I posted and some from my Mt. Baldy, GMR run.

Default Spacers would give that car the stance it deserves.

I'll be in the same boat once mine comes in, but it just kills me to see wheels sitting that far in from the edge of the fenders.

Are the tires 255s all the way around?

Default Yep... 100% agree. That was my feeling and the consensus of everyone at the dealer...

Expect to see those wheels move a bit out once I have the time. I'm thinking something in the 20-25mm range. What do you think?

I'd shoot for an overall offset of 35mm. 30mm is a bit too much. What is the current offset?

Default dark grey. I think your car was in a Transformer promotion. Optimus Prime kicked it to Timbuktu! ;)

So no word on yours?

Default "2.0T - more than meets the eye!" ;-)

It's due 8/13 and my dealer is trying to rush the transport... I'm sure most say that, but they have a vested interest as I am in a rental/loaner until it arrives on their dime (more or less).

As long as I can drool over the pics of yours cruising the canyons I'll be okay!
