Default Ahhh, yesh, the Extech #42520, the preference of pros. - Is that the oral or "other" model??? ;-)

But, seriously, what is it's use? Is this intake related? Can you literally just point at something and it'll give you a surface temperature?

Default Lots of uses....>>>

Yes, it measures surface temp from a distance (1" spot at 6" distance). Racers use them to check tire temps across the tread. Helps with suspension set-ups. You can isolate hot spots in engine areas for diagnostic purposes (we use these all the time in the M/C service dept.), etc. I don't think it's designed for oral use though! Use your imagination!

Default I doubt you can get accurate tire temps with that thing...

Not to say, it won't give you actual tire surface temp, but usually, racers have the probe (tiny needle) kind of pyromenter.

The surface of the tire cools off very quickly, and the heat dissipates across the tread as well. To get accurate tire temps, you have to come into the hotpits at almost full speed, while you have your buddy standing by with the pyrometer. And, then of course you can do the standard inside, outside, middle measurements.

Default I used one to detect a fever once! Pointed it at my own forehead, and then...

...at somebody else's. The difference was about 3 degrees F, so I was pretty sure that I was sick.....
