coilovers are built as a team. the valves in the shock are not spec'd so you know you bought stiffer shocks that can go with any spring. they are spec'd to support ONLY the spring supplied for the coilover. alot of times coilovers have much less compression than aftermarket shocks, so they ride alot smoother. the coilover springs are usually stiffer and there is your gain in handling. hope that makes sense
