'00 TT with in-service date of July '99; fuel gauge failed in 2003 and now reads > 1/4 tank off; temp gauge is now also off by about 1/2 tick (used to normalize dead center, now normalizes right above same) -- Austin, TX:
Called local dealer last week and scheduled a dropoff for yesterday. When I called I told them that it was for the instrument panel cluster recall and they seemed to know what I was talking about. Gave them my pertinent info (I'd never been to this dealer before... Audi badge was sold to them a few years ago and I had no desire to deal with their predecessor, who was known for shit work, returning cars dirty, and returning cars with LOTS more miles than they were dropped off with, instead opting to have warranty/prepaid work done when I was visiting Dallas, Houston or San Antonio, not that Dallas was any better, "fixing" my misaligned window to let in more noise and water than ever before and "repairing" a punctured tire without removing it from the rim... those little repairs ended up costing me $400 to fix again.) Today I got a call back from my service manager saying that she didn't understand how my complaint fit in with the cluster settlement. She said everything they'd seen from Audi was related to the LED display panel, not the actual gauges. I have since directed her to www.instrumentclustersettlement.com, which specifically refers to "premature failure (e.g., gauges such as the fuel gauge and the speedometer giving false readings)." Nowhere can I find any reference to the LED display in the settlement documents -- sparse as they are. I pointed out further that I had already submitted and been approved for my claim based solely on the fuel gauge (the temp gauge did not go out until this year, well outside the 6-year window). I'll update when I hear back. So far it's usual dealership run-around BS (but they are doing a recall timing belt inspection). I remember exactly when I first noticed my fuel gauge out: October 2003. I was on my way down to Houston for a weekend of a charity golf tournament and football game. Though my fuel light came on, I was still at ~1/4 tank, so I wasn't too worried. Then I ran out of gas. When I took it in for scheduled maintenance in January '04, I told my mechanic about it (thankfully, because he put it on my repair order, otherwise I would have been screwed). He told me he had just had another one in with the same complaint and had to replace the entire cluster and that it ran ~$1600 all-in (I like how the parts price has suddenly dropped now that AoA is going to be incurring that price as an expense on their books). He understood completely when I said, "well, since the low fuel light still works, I think I'm good." |
