Default How-To (it's been a long time!): Rear Differential Oil Replacement...

A relative easy job, not on a maintenance interval. My fluid was darker that new, and there was minimal build up of metal (wear) flakes on the magnetic drain plug. Probably not a real need to do it, but not too expensive, so what the heck...

Open drain plug (17 mm Allen):

Drain fluid (it is "motor oil" and can be recycled with normal engine oil):

Clean the drain plug of its flakes:

Replace drain and open fill hole (17 mm Allen again):

New oil (available at VW as well):

Pump in a new liter of fluid, plug the hole, and you're good to go:

Default anyone done front bevel box/ differential?

Hi, I did mine a few days ago when I was doing the haldex oil change and fuel fitler. Nice write up.

Has anyone done the front differential bevel box? Isn't it a similar differential and need oil change too?

Default Yep. Same fotki. Change when you change the tranny fluid up front.

Make sure you can open the fill plug BEFORE you drain the fluid.

Default The same, but different.

3.2 DSG bevel drive oil is separate from the transaxle oil. Other than having to refill separately, the procedure should be the same as the posting. Audi lists a special oil, but as far as I can tell MT90 should work.

Default I wouldn't chance anything other than OEM oil on the DSG... Too many odd things happening with

those IMO, and not a good place to "risk it"...

I would also bet the DSG does not use an Allen plug - even later TT's have a different shape (triple-square or Torx - I don't recall).

Default I wouldn't either, but the bevel drive is a separate sump

There's a seal between the two sumps.
