    the trip to Pep Boys to get a new alternator.

    I did make a few deviations from Rich's directions, namely:

    Unbolted the power steering reservoir to get some extra hand room.
    Removed the tensioner completely (after pinning it) to get freer access to the bottom alternator bolt.
    Disconnected the "three-legged hose" connected to the intake manifold to gain some room.
    Dropped a bunch of tools and bolts so it would take me a little longer ; )

    Alternator cost $202 with return of the old one for a reman part with "limited lifetime warranty". It is a Bosch part, with Audi/VW markings on it.
