models before 2002 did not come equipped with a garage door opener. you can retrofit the oem one using the following parts:

8N0-959-719-6PS garage door opener switch (6PS assumes black headliner)
    8E0-909-511A garage door opener transmitter

unfortunately, the path between the switch and the transmitter (which mounts inside the front bumper) is run through one of the core wiring harnesses, which cannot easily be upgraded. however you can buy the plugs that connect to both components and run the wiring yourself. the plug part numbers are:

    8E0 971 934
    4B0 971 978

you will need to run the wires yourself. if you decide to mount the transmitter in the stock location, you will also need:

    8N0-907-371 mounting bracket
    N908 170 02 torx screws

while you only need a few screws, i'd recommend getting 20 or so, because they're cheap and invariably you'll find a use for the rest.
