Default Modshack MAF shootout: VW vs OEM.....Inquiring minds wanted to know...>

This question doesn't seem to go away, so as part of the VTDA testing, I decided to test two new MAF's I had, (1) an OEM refurb from ECStuning PN 06A 906 461EX and (2) a VW PN 06A906461A

I did 2 3rd gear pulls with each from about 2K on up to redline and matched the output of each to comparable RPM points. I also put 5-8 miles on the car after the MAF switch to better get adaptation tables in line. Here we have the data:

<img src="http://images9.fotki.com/v189/photos/7/7305/130918/MAF_gsec-vi.jpg">

As you can see the VW does, as we've expected, have a slightly higher G/Sec output. A little erratic at the low end and not as smooth as the OEM. Keep in mind, these readings are with a **** and VTDA.

The next interesting factoid is the Air/Fuel scaling (using Lambda values, Block 217). You would think, with the VW's higher output, the fuel delivery would be richer. Nope. Surprised me too. Keep in mind I am running an adjustable FPR set at about 3.8bar. The OEM goes richer sooner. This may have to do with how the ECU is calculating fuel delivery using load data vs reported air delivery. Dunno.

Conclusion: While the VW has a slightly higher output, the OEM appears to have a smoother delivery. In addition, the A/F ratios get richer a little sooner (but not overly so) which is probably better considering **** and Boost machine usage....

Anyway, interesting eh? I'll do some runs in a day or so with the TTDA to get some flow comparisons....

Thanks Steve, what do you do in your spare time? Nothing with spiders, I hope!

Thanks, I enjoy good empirical data to prove points. Again, thanks.

Default Recent thread flashback: Steve! You redlined it!?!! AAhhhrrgghhh!!

total motor destruction is imminent...one of the funnier things I've read here. Seriously, thanks for the testing, though. Now that I finally have Ross Tech, I want to get out and do some air flow measurements myself.

Default Being picky to NasTTcar, and not Schwing: It's not really "empirical" if it's only one experiment.

This is good info, but to be empirical, we need to prove this is the norm...again, and again...

Default glad you take the owner's manual as humorous reading!

but the more I think about that, I think it may have been the RX-8 owner's manual that said that, not the TT... hmmm

"folklorish" data then would lead us to believe this is close to the norm....:-)

Default Sure! Here's a few good ones...>

In the event of Airbag deployment:

"be careful not to get the dust into your eyses or into any cuts or scratches"

(Yeah, like that's the FIRST thing I would think about if they went off!)

and:

"do not wash, wax or dry the engine with the engine running. Moving or hot parts could injure you"

(and probably mess up your wax job!)

and:

"A hood that is not completely latched could fly up and block your view while driving"

(well, Duh!)

And:

"Audi cannot be responsible for mechanical damage that could result from inadequate fuel, service, or parts availability"

(Hmmm...)

LOL...

Especially considering the apparent manufacturing tolerances of MAFs.
