3G ipod install in 2001 coupe (with parts list!)

This is my second iPod install in the TT. My first one was done with the help of Jeff Bipes and his auxillary input device (not to mention is patience!). I've since moved up to a 3rd generation ipod, which support a true line-out, not just the headset port. Upgrading to the 3rd gen caused me to rethink my mounting position, and how I wired it up. This is what I ended up with.

    Parts used:
    40 gig 3G iPod
    SIK IMP $29.95
Radio Shack ground loop isolator $15.99 (this was actually in stock at the local shack)
Radio Shack RCA Y cable $3.99 (I don't know if this is the actual one I am using, but you get the idea)
AutoToys Aux Adapter for 2001TT $64.95 If you want to be able to use the CD Changer, use Jeff Bipes Aux-in adapter.
A spare 12' firewire cable (could use whatever power cable you wanted)
Cigarette lighter socket $1.99 (I got one at Fry's)
1.2" inside diameter rubber hole grommet $1.75 (can pick these up at hardware stores. This is the same one that I used in the firewall to route the hose for the boost guage..don't remember who's post that was)
ProClip Holder with Tilt Swivel $34.95 (make sure to get the one that fits your model ipod)
ProClip Angled mount $29.95 (this attaches to the knee bolster. The Holder is then mounted to this)
Access-a-fuse $4.95 (I'm no wiring genious, and these make hooking into a fuse easy
I don't have pictures of the install, just the finished shots.

You can see most of the install shots described below around this forum, I know I've seen em.

    Connecting the Audio:
    1. Attaching the AutoToys adapter is easy. You need to remove the rear body panel covering the CD changer to gain access. If you have a changer, you have to disconnect it and plug in the adapter to the cable. This obviously takes the changer out of the game permanently. Use Jeff's adapter if you want to keep the changer as well.

    2. From the adapter, I plugged in the ground loop isolator, and ran the cables under the back seat, and up into the center tunel near the handbreak. The cylinder of the isolator can be a problem to place. There is a small opening in front of the rear seat, just under the carpet where it fits perfectly.

    3. The two RCA lines from the isolator are plugged into the 2-to-1 RCA Y Cable. This then plugs into the RCA jack on the IMP.

    Connecting the Power:
    1. I removed a fuse (don't remember what number) from the fuse box, and replaced it with an accessafuse. I chose a fuse that is only powered when the ignition is on.

    2. I ran a power/ground line from the fuse box into the tunnel. I attached the hot lead to the fuse, and grounded the other under the dash at the grounding circle (don't know what that thing is actually called).

    3. I then soldered the other two ends to the cigarette lighter socket. I did this for a few reasons. One, its easy to just plug the cigarette adapter that comes with the IMP into this socket, and have power. But, since I used a very long cable, I've now got a 6 ft power extention that I can pull out of the center tunnel through that cover beneath the armrest (you do have one of those, don't you?!?!?), and use for other things outside the car. I couldn't do that if I wired it directly. Plus, I get the benefit of having the fuse protector that is part of the IMP power connector.

    4. hook up the IMP power to this cig socket

    The mount:
    1. In the tunnel, I did a few things. First, I removed the OEM cell phone mounting bracket that is under the tunnel (I did this a few years ago. It just takes up space). It also MAY impeed access to the front plastic cover opening.

    2. I removed the front plastic cover from the tunnel, and used a dremmel to make a square opening that was big enough to allow the large firewire adapter from the IMP to fit through, yet at the same time small enough that the 1/2" grommet would fit in and be snug and not show any 'corners'. I could take pictures if there is interest on how the hole looks.

    3. The ProClip mount is a sturdy couple of plastic pieces that fit well, and are easily installed. The only major issue I have (and its minor) is that I have to fully seat the iPod in the mount before I hook the IMP to it, as the cable isn't long enough to do it any other way (the IMP connectors, that are now in the tunnel, will not come out into the cabin of the car, so the 6 or 8 " of wire is all you get.

    Wrap-up:
The install is pretty easy, and not to technically challenging. The results are outstanding. A logical location without much clutter or crazy visible wiring. I have learned to shift into 5th without smacking my knuckles on it - its a tight fit, as well as making sure the iPod is in the cradle before attaching the IMP.
