since the transmission has no other gear to preselect, I can only assume it has no gear preselected on the idle shaft.

Hmm, mine seems fast 6->5. But 5->4 and 3->2 are only quick when decelerating....

... I'll pay attention to it some more tomorrow.

Try it while cruising in 6th. After a few minutes, downshift, as if to pass, and see

if there's a delay.
