Convertible top replacment
I just got a quote to have my 08 top replaced (it needs it, rip and rear window is coming apart) and I was floored at the cost. I know its a ton of work but, did not expect the cost to be this high, $2200! It in great condition otherwise, only 74k miles. I was going to attempt this myself but, could not find anyone who has done it to get an idea of whats involved. Tons out there for the mk1 but not anything for the mk2.

Had the cloth and frame replaced on my Mk 3 near the end of the warranty (thank god) after a freak failure of the frame/drive mechanism broke one of the frame tubes. Parts alone were $6K.

See if there's a local shop that fixes upholstery on cars. There was one near me, and they fixed mine when the rear window started to separate from the fabric. Only cost about $600 for great repairs. I didn't have a rip, though, so not quite sure what that would run you. Might be a good alternative to a full replacement.

Well, I have my TT in the shop for oil and filter, trans service and to get my top working again. It's been there 4 days as of tomorrow. I know that all this work is going to be a big bill. probably $1500 - $2000. Thats just to get the top working (and the two service items also. The next big one is getting the top replaced with new one. That's another $2100 and I have not started any mods yet. I'm not to worried, I paid $8k and the KBB lists it at $13500 (as long as these things are fixed). The price at 13500 is on the high end of the spectrum but, the black paint is perfect and the new roof will be perfect. So at the end of the day in my mind, its worth investing money in it.

The TT is in the shop now getting the new top installed. I also started detailing the paint, the hood and trunk are done and ceramic coated but I still have the rest of the car to do. Below is a pic of the hood. This process is, sanding with 2,000 grit then 3000 grit sandaper, then a three-step process buffing. 6 in buffer using 3M rubbing compound (orange pad) then polishing compound (blue pad) and finally scratch and swirl remover (twice, once with white pad and again with black pad).
