Default 2013 VW Golf R or 2012 TTS

I have another "this one or that one" question. Currently have a 2006 Pontiac Solstice as a weekend/around town car that I want to trade in. I originally started looking at VW GTI 2-doors, and then drove a Golf R that made me really smile. Seeing as I was now in a $35K price point for a new Golf R, I decided to cross shop it with the TT (I've always loved the MK2 TT's). I've now found a few used TTS's for around $35k-$40k that are getting me excited. Is it fair to say that the Golf R is just a TTS with a manual gear box and usable back seats? I was trying to reason it to myself that a Golf R is just a much cheaper version of the TTS. But at the end of the day, you're just driving a heavily modded all-wheel drive Golf (not too sexy). I know the MK1 was a Golf with sexier skin, but the MK2 has a different frame that is lighter and more rigid. So is the main difference just esthetics and personal preference, or is there more that separates these two cars?

Are there any TTS owners out there that had this same dilemma?

Default No. They are not the same

A TT is not a Golf with a pretty skin. They share the same chasis and some parts but they are completely different animals. Compare specs between Mk I or Mk II TTs with their Golf counterparts and you will see substantial performance differences. For example, the 2012 TTS is about .6 seconds faster than a 2013 Golf R in 0-60 due to a much better engine.

You need to do your homework, compare styles and your personal preferences, test drive, and decide. Personally, I would never choose a new Golf R over a low mileage TTS if they were comparable pricing, but different strokes for different folks.

An intangible is that the TT is a relatively rare car with sales averaging less than 200/month (all TT models) for the past several yers. So if yoou like being distinctive....

Finally, if you can find a used 2012 TTS for under $40K asking price, it is a bargain. I did a quick check of Autotrader and Cars.com and the cheapest 2011 I could find in the entire US was $42K, 2012 were more.

Golf R has praticality over TTS. That's it. Although they look similar on paper, performance gap is huge.

VIR track times by C&D:
TTS,3:08.4
R,3:14.0

5.6sec per lap is enormous. Some of it has to do with manual vs DSG, but still, TTS is very capable.

Unless you must have the manual, I think choice is easy.

i am also interested in this. what is the real difference in the vw 2.0 tsfi and the audi? i know 10 hp, but what else really?

both the vw tt and the golf r have the same 2.o showing 256hp. are they the same engine? how do both get the extra hp out of the same block?

any help understanding this would be very welcome.

Default Fundamentally, it's intake boost, valve timing, and exhaust

You'd have to look at the Audi and VW sites for general details. Your Audi or VW service manager might have more info. For example the 1.8 engine in the MK I was available in the US as a 180 and 225 HP engine but I recall that they sold a 150 HP version in Germany. Meanwhile, the same block was used in several VW models in the US.

Sort of like a computer. You can make two dramatically different desktops by adding premium graphics cards. etc to the same processor.

Why so many variations of the same block? To help justify different price points for different model cars. APR dyno testing of the new TFSI VL engine in the base TT that has been used since 2011 shows 220 HP and 290 ft-lb of torque. So why is Audi quoting 211 and 240? Because they want to justify the premium price for the TT-S.
