Default What is the latest opinion on transmission fluid changes?

My '01 TT is up around 80,000 miles and I was considering changing the manual transmission oil.

I called my local Audi dealer to get an estimate and they told me I should never change the transmission oil. They said it was a life time fluid and I would cause more problems by changing it.

I am sure I read other posts that recommended changing the fluid with Red Line 90.

So, who's right? Should I change it or leave it alone?

Default When it comes to long term maintenance the dealer is very rarely right

New fluid at 80k is about the right time, Redline MT90, Amsoil GL4 or even factory fill will work.

I changed to MT90 at ~110k miles. Felt a bit nicer. Do it.

Default Never? Wow. I changed mine at 80K KM's. The synthetic makes it so much smoother

My oil coming out was pretty dark too.

Default lifetime = as long as warranty

The dealer does not care if they are not footing the bill.
Yes, it should be fine with no change. But yes, it will last longer and shift better with an oil change.

Default Cause more problems by changing it? Your dealer is an idiot.

I just changed mine for the second time at 160,000 miles. Transmission felt the same before and after the change; I did it more for preventative maintenance. The drain plug has a magnet, which had collected a nice layer of metal shavings. I used Redline MT90. You can use any synthetic 75w-90, including the OEM fluid.
