Default spend $100 for a mechanic to look at your purchase. If you can't justify that, you probably

need to rethink things. there are a number of things to ask, first and foremost is if the timing belt has been done (about $750 if it hasn't, but don't put it off or it's $3750 for a motor rebuild.) check all your gauges for proper operation, as the cluster is a common failure point, and another $1000. good luck. we all love ours

Default to go along with what ArTT said, don't believe them if they say the timing belt was changed...

for me any way I would only believe the work order invoice showing vin # or milage or something to prove that the work was done on that car. my $.02

Default Read the FAQ thread. There is a "buyer's guide" in there

along with a ton of other info. These cars can be VERY problematic (especially earlier years) but nothing that this forum can't help you with if you are comfortable turning a wrench. If you aren't, they can be expensive to fix, especially at the dealers, who charge upwards of $125/hr and tend to bill longer than the job actually takes. I.e. find a good independant shop that specializes in Audis and have them look it over.

I have 152K miles and my engine has held up pretty well -- but that's about the only thing.<ul><li><a href="https://forums.audiworld.com/tt/msgs/1389261.phtml">FAQ thread</a></li></ul>
