Default Just got a TT mk1 and want to sort out 2 issues (A/C and P1296)

Hi everyone. I just got a 2002 TT 1.8T from my uncle who bought it from his colleague. It currently has 100,000 miles. It's adult own and has never been modified and beaten. The car is fun, but I have 2 current issues that I would like to figure out. I hope someone would be able to help me with that. I'll give you as much information as possible so it might help with troubleshooting.

Issue #1: Engine light with P1296 code
When my uncle bought it a year ago (700 miles earlier), the light came on after a few month. I did research and replaced a coolant temp sensor. Since then it hadn't come back on. Worth noting, he didn't drive much and often at all (possibly 10 miles each time). The light didn't come back home when I drove a car home long distance (~120 miles) which is a longest non-stop trip it has ever been driven since last year). The next day, I drove it around and the light came on with the same code. I did some checking using the hidden code to measure the coolant temp. I was told that to use 49C (not 51C). Below are the results (also pictures attached) after driving around in the city for about 30 minutes. From my research, the gauge is supposed to go half-way, is that correct? It never got halfway and the temp never got pass 76C. Do you think it's a sign that t-stat is bad? I might try to change a sensor again since it's easy to change and not that expensive. But I just didn't think that the one I replaced last year would have gone bad so quickly.
  • Outside temp: 18C (65F)
  • Coolant temp:
    • Gauge: 1/3 mark
    • My cheap OBDII scanner: 73C
    • 49C code: 76C
    • 51C code: 90C

Issue #2: A/C not blowing cold
At one point of his ownership, he notice that the a/c stoped blowing cold air. I remember it worked when checking out the car with him last year, but he didn't use it much anyway. He took it to a local mechanic (not a European specialist) and they said that the compressor is leaking and it needs a new compressor. I did some test for him. The refrigerant seems low so I added some (to 30 psi). The compressor kicked on (so did a fan) as I turned temperature down to LO, but the air was not cold. I would think that if what the mechanic said is true, if I added refrigerant to certain level (~30 psi), it would at least have cold air coming out. I didn't dismiss that the compressor was not leaking, but I just thought that there might be something else that caused my a/c not to blow cold air. I did researches and found that it could be due to an a/c pressure switch (by the firewall). Is it possible? I'm trying to understand why the pressure switch would prevent air from blowing cold.
Any help or suggestion will be greatly appreciated.
