newbie Audi TT owner
#16
Gave my 16 yr old daughter a 93 SHO - Worse Dad mistake of my life....
Wrecks, bent stuff, ouch..... Replaced it with a way underpowered 00 VW Cabrio. No problems since.
Dad, you may want to consider driving the TT and give her something else.

Slightly long story to answer the question about the miscalculation. Let's start with the easy ones first. Paid $11,750 for the car. It has 98K on it. The car has everything in it (heated seats, nav system, etc....) Cost $575 to get it shipped to NY from Chicago area. The car from an appearance perspective, inside and out, is in great shape. People can't believe it's a 2001. I am taking it to a private mechanic specializing in Audi's and VW's next week to get it checked out mechanically. I think fluids need to be changed and will probably have the timing belt done as well (don't know if it was ever changed.)
Now for the story. Sorry if it's long winded. My daughter started bugging me for a car last January. This from a girl that didn't turn 16 until August. At first she wanted a BMW. Eventually she went down to wanting a jetta, then fell in love with the TT. She kept looking them up on different sites. I think deep down she knew it was unrealistic but she kept trying anyway. Of course, there was no way she was going to get a car that expensive. My wife insisted we get something with side air bags since a girl from my daughter's school would have been killed in an accident if she didn't have them. I looked into the TT a little bit more and saw it had 5 star front and side crash tests, side air bags, ABS, all wheel drive, and was eventually convinced it was a pretty safe car. However, my daughter is 5' 1" tall so I figured she'd be too short for the car. I took her to an Audi dealer and lo and behold if the seat didn't have a vertical adjustment which let her see out the windows.
The next day she saw a TT on ebay for $10,100 with 7 hours left which had no reserve. I decided to teach her a lesson and show her you could not get a car for that cheap. I bid $10,200 and it then automatically jumped the next bid $100 above mine. Did this a few more times, sometimes jumping $200 a clip. I put in a bid of $11,400 and it jumped to $11,500. I told my daughter one more bid and I was going to increase it by $250. I knew in my mind someone had a max bid of $12,500 or at the very least $12K. I punched in $11,750 as my max bid. All of the sudden it's telling me I'm high bidder at $11,600. This was a shock. There were still 7 hours left in the auction and I figured the prior bidder would log on and outbid me so I wasn't worried. He did logon about two hours later, bid 11,700, and my max bid of 11,750 kicked in. He didn't bid anymore. I started to get a little nervous at this point but figured he'd wait until a minute or so left in the auction and outbid me and I'd escape.
At five minutes left, no other bids, 4 minutes, no counter bid, 3, 2 1, no other bids. I was screaming at the computer for the person to bid and why were they waiting so long. 25 seconds, I was still high bidder. Needless to say I won the bid and hence the "miscalculation" and name I chose for this forum. I've also had a few comments on how this is the first time people have seen a child with a better car than the parents.
It's been interesting so far. I had to change light bulbs for the front parking lights as well as a turn signal. My hands are all scraped up from that. And yes, I am teaching her how to drive a standard. That's been a wee bit interesting. She just got her license Dec. 6. Luckily, she's a careful, cautious driver. So far she won't take the car without me. Even if she's using our automatics she's careful and likes us to go with her if it the conditions are in anyway questionable or if it's dark.

That's a great story - I've been there myself, although not bidding on a car!
Hoping, desperately that someone will outbid my fiscal irresponsibility!
Good luck with the car - first thing I would suggest is getting a set of snow wheels for it. If you're in the Chicago area, you'll definitely need them and it'll give you some peace of mind with your daughter.
I would definitely do the timing belt/tensioner/water pump - even if by chance its been done at 60Kish, it'll give you peace of mind for another 60K miles.
With respect to ABT, post some photographs - does it have stock 5 spoke wheels? The badge could be any number of things from visual to performance.
Good luck!
