Just passed 120k and the knocking is getting more noticeable.. ideas >>
I'm really not sure how to explain the knocking noise, seems to only be there when I first start her up, then it usually goes away. Also I hear it for a couple of seconds when I turn the defroster on..
From under the hood, sounds like it's coming from behind the engine more towards the passenger side.
Sounds like a sorta grinding, knocking noise?
From inside the car the noise is coming from behind the radio/glove box area and sounds more like a muffled lawnmower engine.
I'm thinking it could be maybe the condenser or possibly even my sway bar bushings cause those are getting pretty noisy, maybe the high idle of the car when I first start it makes the sway bar shake making the noise?
OR
I was thinking maybe the motor mounts are going? making the noise? They have never been replaced..
Also, lately sometimes my car will sputter a little when idling. My car will idle at 700-800 RPM's, fall to about 500-600 rpm's then go up to about 900 rpm's then fall to idle at 700-800 rpm's and do it over and over till I give it a good rev... even then, sometimes it still goes on..
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated

'From your description I would guess a cracked exhaust manifold or broken bolts.

well, "taking it off," referring to the exhaust manifold, is a pretty major task, possibly to yield
broken studs in the head which will need the attention of a machine shop.
You may need to seek the advice of a competent and honest mechanic.

Not to scare you... but I had a very similar knock with my motor about 2 years ago...
There was an oil jet cooler that sprays oil onto the pistons that busted loose. The knocking noise ultimately led to a new motor
Good luck!

I had pulled my car into the garage for the winter...
and noticed it didn't sound right. I let it idle for a little bit and noticed a deffinite engine "knock." It was hard to determine where exactly it was coming from, but being inside the garage magnified everything. I had some boost issues (over-boosting) but as soon as I noticed the knock, I took it easy, and drove it to the shop ASAP.
Bottom Line- Knocks can be VERY BAD! It needs to be looked at before any permanant damage is done.
