Intermittent knocking in rear of car. hmmm
very frustrating! happens mostly under load(acceleration),almost had a heart attack-- thought it was a rod knock at first on a dark night outside ithaca.
had car in air at home both rear cv look good-boots intact,no leaks, not loose.
lugs are tight, doesnt happen all the time.
thoughts are brake pads? muffler heat shield?
i have seen some posts on it but nothing definitive. although sometimes it does it when not under load(acceleration) sometimes it stops a good? bump(pothole etc.)

check the upper shock mounts... they're secured by a single bolt in back
If loose (even slightly) bumps and potholes can trigger intermittent clunks and knocks...
under acceleration, or not
remove the back wheels and plastic inner fender liners for access

I finally installed zerk fittings in the rear to ease the lubes on those bushes... such a pita to take them apart each time

"handbrake quiets it down quite a bit"..
a loose pad should shut up completely with the brake applied
given this info you should look at all of the fasteners on the rear calipers, especially the two that attach the caliper to the backing plate
One of those fell out on a BMW I used to have... a horrific intermittent racket
I've never seen a bad rear CV joint, but you might have one
also the giant nut that holds the axles to the hub could be loose... there's a torque spec but basically you tighten these as tight as they'll go
got any other symptoms?

Problem found.... broken rear OUTER CV!!!
changed rear brake pads on sun, noticed LR outer cv boot was askew. so I took car to dealer where crash repair was done, hoping to get some action, they said i could try my ins adjuster... so i did... he says he was out of town but will talk to body shop tomorrow and see if he can get it taken care of for me!!!?? thats good news cause the Audi tech said he has never seen one bad on a TT. new part is $580!!! aftermarket virtually non existent. plus labor!!
