I see owners using 5w-30 freely (not the suggested grade), so do you think going up to a 15W-50(also

Default I thought VW 503.01 was spec'd for 1.8t engines with higher than 180hp

Mobil 1 0w40 and German Castrol Syntec 0w30 both meet this spec (along with a few others), correct?

Default not sure about the "higher than 180hp" part, but those oils are on AoA list

Almost all of the others on the list are 5w40 weights, though. I always thought the list applied to all 1.8t's but maybe you're right. I don't know and don't have the list with me.

Default while on the subject of wide viscosity ranges, does anyone use 0W-50, if exists>>

and would there be a downside that any of you are aware of to a very wide viscocity range (if not, why not go as wide as possible)?

and jhoeppel, thanks for the explanation. I'm going to buy 5w-40.

Default never seen anything this wide... >>

what I've heard is that all multigrades start out as their lower-numbered oils (the 5w in a 5w40) to which additives and viscosity-improvers (VI's) are added to thicken it to the higher number when it warms up. The wider the viscosity range the more additives and other things are needed to increase the spread, and the more likely it's viscosity will change when the oil gets old and those VI's break down. Mobil's 0w40 or Castrol's 5w50 are the widest I've seen. Besides an oil that acts like a 50 weight when the engine is hot would probably be thicker than needed for our street cars, increasing pumping losses and cutting down fuel mileage, which of course isn't much of an issue on the track, hence the use of 15w50 in heavy duty racing-type applications.
