EDIT: I think I might go with a lower viscocity oil, sounds like most people won't use higher than 40. I don't have access to an '01 manual, only the '00MY manual and it doesn't have viscocity specs. IIRC the suggested grade is 5W-40.
Steve: this is what I was thiking when I originally posted:

-----------------
I just bought a bunch on clearance at Walmart (they didn't have 5W/10W-40/50). I'm thinking I should save it for the summer months....but even then not sure about the viscosity.
I have 10W-30 synthetic in it right now, which i think will be fine for winter
thanks guys

I will take it back. Why is it ok to go lower than recommended ..>>
?question:
I'm taking the oil back tomorrow, but for my understanding: I see owners using a thinner 5w-30 freely (not the suggested grade), so why is going up to a 15W-50(also not a suggested grade) for summer not ok?

it not so much summer/winter as startup/high speed issues... >>
15w-xx won't flow as well on startup as a 5w-XX oil will. That's the problem going to a thicker 15w-50... not so much the top (hot end) number, but the bottom (cold-start) end of the viscosity isn't free-flowing enough.
The "40" number is probably req for high speed autobahn stuff and since most in the US don't have the opportunity to do this often, they feel that a lower "hot end" number would be Ok (hence the use of the more commonly available 5w30). I'm not so sure this thinking is wise, as our cars tend to run hot with the turbo and restricted space under the hood, so I use a 5w40 synthetic, which covers me on both ends.
