Default Help

I am well aware that I don't know much about what I am talking about, please don't make fun. I have a 2001 tt and it is blowing coolant out the reservoir and gets hot way too fast. Depending on the temperature I can only drive it about 10-15 miles before the coolant will start boiling out of it. At one point I did have oil in my coolant I took it to the dealership and they replaced the oil cooler and I have not seen any in there since. I replaced the thermostat not too long ago to see if that would fix the issue but it seemed to do nothing. I know the fans don't kick on all the time like they are supposed to and from what I understand the issues that could be in front of me are fans, head gasket, radiator, or even the water pump. Again, please don't laugh I don't know the most about these cars but I'd like to be able to fix this issue. Thanks so much!

I would bet that its water pump that's failed. No coolant circulation and the expanding coolant would definitely cause it to blow out of the over flow tank.

I've the exact same symptoms. I think it's my water pump. I bought my 2001 Roadster a few weeks ago and have been collecting the parts I need to do the job. The previous owner said the TB was done a couple of years ago so I'm not driving it until I do this work.

Cheers.

The early original pumps were plastic and fall apart.

You can pumps with metal impellers or use the newer plastic ones that are supposed to be much better.

Don't drive it, if the pump fails completely you could need a new motor.

Is the water pump something I could do myself? I don't have anything to lift the motor or anything like that.

There's an old thread that has surfaced giving detailed instructions to replace the timing belt/water pump. Have a read through that thread and then you'll be able to determine if you have the skills and tools to do the job.

Cheers.
