Default Good buy on this TT??? Advice would really help

Hi guys, I'm a noob with my first post here on AW. I've been reading up on the forums for a month or two now and feel pretty solid about buying a used TT. I am looking to be into my new car before May 1, so I've got about 2 months to find a good one.

Here are my specs:

- I'm looking to spend 23K or less.

- I'm looking for a car with 40K miles or less

- I'm looking for a 2002/2003 TT 225 Quattro
Coupe (with the Premium, Audio and Cold Weather Packages)

- I'm looking for a non-modded, CPO car, so I don't have to worry so much for the next 2 years.

Here's my dilemma. I just saw a 2003 Silver Coupe/33K miles at a dealer, going for 23.9K, but by the time I got there, they had sold it. That would have been perfect.

Now, I just spoke to another dealer and they have pretty much the same exact car, but it's a 2002 with 39K miles and they're asking the 23.6K.

What I'm looking for are thoughts on the price. As far as I see online, 2003s that fit my criteria are going for much more....will I find one in the next two months, or should I just go for the 02? If I do go for the 02, can I get that price down...it kills me to spend the same for a car that's a year older with 8k more miles! The dealers are about 20 miles apart...I was thinking of printing both ads out and brining them with me...and trying to bargain them down based on the 03's price.

Any help on this would be great...any other advice on getting a new TT would also help me out.

Hopefully, I'll be back on the boards in a few weeks as a new TT owner.

Thanks,
Michael

I'd offer $21.5 on the 02 you like and be done with it :-)

Check edmunds.com and kbb.com for wholesale/retail values in your market on the '02. It's at least a place to start. Your strategy of taking the ad in may not be a bad one. I recall that another forum member said dealers typically mark up used cars 15-22% . . . for what it's worth. Keep in mind that
that a CPO car can cost up to $2000 more, I believe, but think about what you're getting for that, especially if you intend to keep it. When did the '02 first go into service? It may or may not still have some original warranty left. Overall, decide what you're willing to pay for the '02 and be aggressive with the dealer. You may also want to ask other forum members about differences between '02 and '03, particularly some of the electrical gremlins, etc. Good luck!

Default Ditto what Joe says. And with end of month near, there's more dealer motivation >>

to get the car out of inventory. Did they quote you CPO or non-CPO price?

Default TT years

It might not be important to you but the ECU in the 03 model is much larger in memory size. This means that in future modding it "may" be easier, this will really only affect you if in your future you are going Big Turbo.

Default I disagree somewhat, I don't think the memory will matter

I have a 2000 and use APR's software and have every program they offer, that means 4 seperate programs on the same chip- I would think that the memory issue would be somewhat pointless. Also where did you find out that the 03's have more memory? Like the pic by the way!

Right. DPP will only let you do so much on our cars, but a real chip has a TON of potential.

Default edmunds is deffy not inflated ...

use edmunds and kbb as your first stop for price in your area then slowly move out of state. most likely you'll get good deal out of state (speaking from my own experience). also CPO is an awesome idea cuz it'll make your car
worry-less

FYI, I just bought a 2003 coupe just like you want for $25k with only 10k miles with 2 full years of warranty left; it included factory 18" wheels and a very good aftermarket stereo. I passed on a absolutely perfect 2002 silver coupe with 22k for $23k from a dealer in Indianapolis and a 2002 amulet red with 15k for $23500 from a dealer in Florida. In other words, check Autotrader and bargain hard. Whether anyone on this forum will recognize it, there is not much demand for TTs nowadays which is a good opportunity to pick up a fine car on the cheap.
