Check the gauge operation with VAG.com.

If you don't have VAG.com, why not ? . If the miles to empty in the info screen agrees with the sender it's the gauge.

The needles move slightly every time they hit the stop. Recalibrate using VAG.com. Install needle using a small qty of superglue gel.

If that doesn't work ship to Module Master for a new stepper motor.

This is common on this year TT. Mine is a 2000 and my gas gauge stopped working as well. I recently had the cluster refurbed by BBE REMAN. You can find them on EBAY oddly enough. For 240 bucks they will refurbish yours.

The caveat is you need to take it out and ship it to them. Takes them 2 days and they send it back. the cost of the refurb covers the shipping to.

The gauge cluster seems to be the most common culprit in this.
I too have the same problem. If your tripometer works, the car should get at the worst 25 mpg or 375 miles to the tank. Until you decide to sent the gauge cluster out for refurbishing, the tripometer should help you get through it. My car is seasonal, May through October. I plan on sending mine out next spring.
